Descriptions
Soybeans, scientifically known as Glycine max, are a vital oilseed crop globally, with Nigeria emerging as a notable producer and exporter of this versatile legume. Renowned for their high protein and oil content, soybeans play a vital role in various industrial applications, making them indispensable in global agriculture and trade.
Cultivated across diverse agroecological zones in Nigeria, soybeans thrive as an annual summer crop, planted between May and July and harvested from October to December. Farmers use modern agricultural practices such as mechanised planting, irrigation, and crop rotation to optimise yield and quality by flourishing in well-drained, fertile soils with adequate moisture and sunlight. Harvesting involves mechanised cutting or uprooting of soybean plants, followed by threshing to separate pods from the plant. To extract soybean oil and meal, the harvested soybeans undergo drying to reduce moisture content and prevent spoilage before further processing, including cleaning, dehulling, and crushing.
